Handy bus lines near The Beehive

Many of you know The Beehive is 2 blocks, a 5-minute walk from Termini train station, Rome’s main public transit hub.  However, we are also just 2 blocks from Piazza Indipendenza – a less hectic place to catch the bus.

Piazza Indipendenza has two very useful bus lines for Beehive guests – the 75 and the 492. Coming from The Beehive, the first stop you will encounter is the 75 which is the beginning of the line for this route.

Places of interest on the 75 bus route:

  • Roman Forum (stop Fori Imperiali)
  • Colosseum (stop Colosseo)
  • Circus Maximus (stop Circo Massimo)
  • Aventine Hill (stop Aventino)
  • Testaccio neighborhood (stop Porta S. Paolo or Marmorata)
  • Trastevere neighborhood (stop Morosini E in front of the Regina Margherita hospital)

To get to the stop for the 492 that will take you in the direction you need, you’ll find it here in front of this bar.

Places of interest on the 492 bus route:

  • Piazza Barberini/Museum Palazzo Barberini (stop Barberini)
  • Trevi Fountain (stop Tritone)
  • Pantheon (stop Argentina)
  • Piazza Navona (stop Rinascimento or Senato)
  • Museum Palazzo Altemps (stop Zanardelli)
  • St. Peter’s Basilica (stop Bastioni di Michelangelo)
  • Vatican Museums (end of the line, metro Cipro)

Termini train station has many useful bus lines including the 40 (an express bus which takes you quicker into the heart of the historic center, but can be very crowded), the 64 (essentially the same bus route as the 40, but not an express), the H bus takes you to the Trastevere neighborhood and the 910 gets you over to the Borghese Gallery.

Google Maps is quite handy for public transit but is not without fault. For example, it doesn’t recognize that you can walk through Termini station so when guests start up Google Maps in the station, it has them go a very long way around to reach us.  Instead, follow our own very detailed directions.  We are a straight shot –  only 2 blocks, about 5 minutes walk from the station.

A few important things to keep in mind:

  • Bus tickets cannot be purchased on the bus. Tickets are €1,50 and can be bought at newsstands or tobacco shops.
  • There is no orderly queue to get on at the front of the bus.  All bus doors open and it’s a free for all of people getting on and getting off.
  • Validate tickets in the yellow date/time stamp machine boxes located at the front and the back of the bus.
  • If for some reason the validation machine is not working (which happens more often than you would think – surprise, surprise), write in pen on the ticket the time and the date that you boarded the bus.  Ticket controls by public transit agents are happening more and more often these days and fines are hefty.
  • Bus tickets are valid for 100 minutes of travel time. It’s important to re-validate your ticket whenever you reboard a bus during those 100 minutes.
  • Pickpockets and pervs love crowded public transit. Keep an eye on your belongings, and ladies, move if you feel someone is crowding you or making you uncomfortable.
